I have been asked to take on the responsibility of leading IATEFL Hungary's Culture and Literature Special Interest Group, starting this summer, and am very honoured that the leadership thought of me. One of the tasks is to put together a dynamite SIG afternoon for the upcoming autumn conference, the theme of which is "Empower(ed), Learning communities" So that is one of the things that has been on my mind, thinking of possible presentations and presenters along this theme. I post this information here in the hopes that some of my blog readers may add there ideas as to what they might find thought provoking and enriching in connection with this theme.

IATEFL Hungary - 2010 Conference, Looking Back

As the invitation to the 2011 IATEFL Hungary conference has just come out, it seems an appropriate time to look back, especially since I have not done so yet.
I was once again honoured to be asked to fill the role of "Conference Crier", that is MC, for the third time, working again with a terrific team of dedicated organizers and having the pleasure of meeting great presenters. I cannot do justice to them all here, suffice to say that I found all the presentations I attended informative, and enriching. I will though mention a personal highlight...

The Friday afternoon SIG events are a strong start to the weekend, and it was no different last autumn. I'm a member of the Culture and Literature Special Interest Group, where we had the opportunity to see a demo lesson. Mark Andrews, ELTE English Methodology, presented a lesson with students from the nearby secondary on the tragic events in Kolontar and Devecser, involving the red sludge and alumna mine catastrophe. He took a multidisciplinary approach to the material, using images, colours, fruit, props to educate and teach. I share Mark's views on using current events in the classroom and in searching for ways to teach English through creative and sometimes unconventional means. I believe strongly that any class, for that matter any subject is an opportunity to help students to think critically and reflect on the world around them. Language teaching is an area that seeks to use authentic material in its context, and moving, at least for a moment beyond the paradigm defined by the text book and syllabus is a way to add meaning to a lesson. By meaning I refer to a further dimension, beyond the mechanics of the language being learnt, but in symbiosis to it, that is thoughts, questions, truth, and information about "life". I feel that we teachers often fear to move outside of the safe artificiality of a given course's "material", or if not fear then simply do not take the time and energy. It is something I feel is increasingly relevant, because we live in a world that is information driven and students of all ages consume vast amounts of information, at present without any guidance on how to read, digest, select, find, question etc the hoards of data. It is, however not only a question of guidance, but possibly at first an encouragement to use the information technology available not only for entertainment but enrichment. It was good to be part of an event that inspired teachers to engage their students in a provocative yet fun way.
On a personal professional note, the lessons my students have found the most engaging, the most memorable, and I believe were the most educational were those ones were I took the time to expand the given material at hand by opening a window on the world, something I try to do more and more in my teaching practice.

Blessed Saint Patrick's Day!

Wishing all Irish, those of Irish descent and those of Irish spirit a very blessed day today!

My celebrations are a bit low key this year, having taken a sabbatical from teaching at the high school, where I went all out in terms of Irish fun in past years. Contrary to habit I didn't mention Saint Patrick and Ireland at yesterday's classes at the University, we did "book work", something we were a bit behind on. There are so many dramatic events happening nowadays, that having a look at them during class can "slow down" the the pace of progress according to the syllabus and lesson plans. We've been looking at the Middle East (using in part a Sean Bannville lesson, many thanks!!!) and took some time for Wales and Saint David. I think next week I'll digress again and have a look at events in Japan, especially since some of my students are Japanese majors and minors and also mention Ireland and Saint Patrick. As those who know me, and my students past and present will attest I believe strongly in using EFL/ELT lessons as opportunities to integrate cultural and social studies into language teaching. A practice I find possibly more important at a university, though maybe just as important at secondary school level...hm...
Anyway, just some musings on St. Paddy's day.

Yesterday's event was a great success. We packed room 104 with 25-30 participants who all enjoyed a bit of island spirit. The guests were university and secondary school students and teachers, from various institutions, from fields as diverse as history, theology, law, Japanese studies, language teaching, (English, German and French) and even medicine.
The presentations gave insight on the musical, linguistic, cultural/spiritual tradition and the relevancy of Jamaica's heritage. For the detailed program see below
I would like to again say thank you to the sponsors of the event (MM Pub. ELT Hun., OUP, CUP), who added colour, materials and flavour to the event. And to our patron the Honourary Consul for Jamaica.
I am also indebted to some former students, Gabor, Kristof, David, and Jozsi who came and helped with the food, decorations, IT, and so many other little but crucial things.

And thank you to the presenters who made it all so very enriching!

The Almost Naked Chef strikes again... Calorie Bomb

This time in beautiful Fonyod, on the Balaton, at King Matthias Secondary School where they were celebrating Matthias day last Friday. Many thanks to English teacher Gabor Szilasi for inviting me to work with the students. As part of the festivities I worked with a group of about thirty enthusiastic young people to prepare a full traditional English breakfast; eggs, bacon, sausage, black pudding, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast; a veritable calorie bomb! This was finished up with pancakes and maple syrup. We worked in a math classroom that had been transformed into a kitchen, it was terrifically done, we had everything needed. After watching and listening to me go from start to finish the kids had their turn and tested their culinary skills. The five groups each prepared a dish for judging and gorged on the rest of the food. We had the principal and the kitchen ladies come and be the judge deciding on best prepared and presented food. I took some video footage and hope to cut it into a short film to post here.

A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY by Ivan Turgenev

I've done translating before but never a play, most of the work that comes my way is not exactly my cup of tea, I'm thinking of documents like the weapons catalogue or the thesis in microbiology. It was a terrific surprise when my sister Kathy, (with contacts in the theatre world) got in touch with me about doing a translation of Turgenev's A Month in the Country. No I haven't learnt Russian, it was from Hungarian into English. The background to the story is that director László Marton has decide to present the piece at Toronto's Soulpepper Theatre, he is regular guest director there and his desire was to use the Hungarian adaptation of the play that he knows and loves. My job was to translate that adaptation into English as faithfully as I could. The piece was then passed to the theatre's adapter. I have to say that I enjoyed the challenge (even with a short deadline) and am curious to see how the work was molded further into the play to be performed in Toronto this summer (though I probably won't be able to see it there). On February 6th I had the pleasure of hosting fellow IATEFL colleagues At Saint Angela's in my classroom where I demonstrated two recipes that can be done in the ELT classroom with students; pancakes and trifle. Needless to say we had a terrific time and gained weight... You can see pictures of the event on the IATEFL website here.
I got the best feedback of all from Tünde Bajzi, who put what I presented into practice and cooked with her students. The pictures below are of her students enjoying a bit of trifle.

It hasn't been easy to find time to read in the past weeks, or months for that matter. I have however been able to make my way through a couple of books.

On the lighter side I've enjoyed too lighter reads by the American author Martin Cruz Smith, Havana Bay and Polar Star, I found both books in a used books store here in Budapest while looking for something that can be read on the bus, streetcar, subway etc. They were quite satisfying reads. For me at least the key to their success was the hero, Arkady Renko, a former Soviet/Russian police investigator and a professional failure, but with a knack at solving crimes. He is far from a romantic figure, he struggles as much with his own demons as with discerning others. The novels do suffer from a reliance on luck and coincidence a bit too much and that did cause me to emit an inaudible sigh a few times. I would and have recommended them as reads, Havana Bay is still on loan to a friend, as they are good crime stories and do provide a pleasant 'escape'.

Desiring a read with greater 'substance' but still 'fun' to read I turned again to one of the great masters, Graham Greene and a read one of his seminal works, one that I surprisingly had not yet read, Brighton Rock. Well, it's brilliant. It does what all his works do, which is to tell a story but also to provoke thought and reflection and to give hints as to an amazing understanding of human nature and the human condition. In Brighton Rock he deals with the metaphysical more 'blatantly' than in other novels and with such simple tools; a set of simple characters, a flat setting, a short time period and relatively few actions. The greatest questions are presented and we are made to feel uncomfortable by them; good and evil, right and wrong, Heaven and Hell, sin and redemption... I put the book down with the feeling that it will be one of those that I return to and reread in the future.

It has filled me with great pride to see Canada hosting the world, the best of the best in Vancouver this year for the Winter Olympics. To my greatest dismay the vast span of time zones has made watching events live almost impossible, though I may stay up for tonight's hockey gold medal match between Canada and the US. And, well watching events after the fact... well it just is not the same... a definite lack of tension. I hoped in vain that Hungary may somewhere somehow win a medal, well we'll have to wait until London. The daily host videos available on youtube have been a terrific way to follow the sporting and cultural events during the games. I've shown my spirit by wearing an Olympic cardigan from The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) sent by my Mum and the official Olympic red mittens sent by an Aunt, though the warming weather here in Budapest has made the mittens a bit impractical (they are very warm). My students too have had to 'bear' seeing the opening ceremonies and learning about the various winter sports.
So Congratulations to Vancouver and British Columbia and GO CANADA!!!

I write this post as some of my grade eleven students write the pre-test of the Theolingua B2 level English language exam. As I have previousy written I volunteered to do the pre-testing of all levels of the English exam. Well this has turned out to more work than I thought. It has though given the opportunity to reflect on various different test types - multiple choice, fill in the blank, full sentence answer etc. Also to think about various text types, styles and lengths. Have I come to any great conclusions, as I pour over lots of filled out tests and weigh the 'fairness' of the various tasks? Far from it, I have more questions now than ever about testing and exams and the 'fairness' of different task types.

Presentation on Canada and its First Nations

Last Thursday I was invited by King Géza I School in Vac to give a presentation on Canada and to act as their judge for their pronunciation competition. I chose to talk about some well known and lesser known aspects of Canada and included material from my presentation on Native Canadians. The audience were English teachers and a group of about 60 secondary school students. I would like to congratulate the winners of the competition, who recited the very moving poem Tichborne's Elegy. Catching up

My goodness I have fallen behind on my personal publishing... again. What am I up to now? The Theolingua language exam is coming up in March and I've been entrusted with the proofreading and what's more the pre-testing of the English language exam at all the levels B1, B2 and C1. This is consuming more time than I expected, the students have been great and found the opportunity to write and reflect on a "real" language exam useful.
In the past weeks second semester has started up at the University and I'm very happy that the terrific C1 level group that I had in the first semester has reformed - with additions, I look forward to having more fun with them, and I think I'll allow myself some greater freedom with the syllabus and introduce some fields of personal interest in terms of introducing more cultural topics.
With my high school students we continue to "plug away" I am still very satisfied with the creativity and positive attitude of my grade nines and the improving relationship to learning with my grade elevens. The grade tens are proving to be a struggle and are very erratic; it has saddened me to see what I feel has been a dampening of their spirit this past school year. My next post will link to a TED talk given by Sir Ken Robinson asking the question Do Schools Kill Creativity?, this short talk has provided a lot of food for thought and having seen it many months ago I still ponder the validity of what he spoke about and its ramifications.
On a less significant and as a preview to a culinary post coming up I have been introduced to the pleasure of a late afternoon coffee (real coffee) due to my mother sending some Starbucks House Blend decaf. I love coffee but if I have one after about three in the afternoon it robs a bit of the nice deep sleep that I love.
Anyway I'll try to "keep you posted" and return to being a better blogger.

I've been having a relaxing weekend at home again and so it was an opportunity to get into the kitchen and try out some of the cook books I got for my birthday. Yesterday I made mulligatawny soup (Gordon recipe) and pizza fritta (Jamie), both the family and the evening guests enjoyed them, so they'll be on the menu again. As I write, some pork belly is roasting and vegetables are being parboiled. Lunch will soon be served!

New Presentations

Yesterday at the MM Publications English teachers' conference I gave a talk on Native North Americans and did a workshop on cooking in the English classroom. The venue was a super modern building on the ELTE campus and as such it was impossible to use a hotplate, so last Thursday a film crew came out and recorded me at work with the students. Live at the conference I made a trifle with the teachers, actually we made three-four huge bowls of trifle and showed the two videos of me cooking in the classroom. At the end there was a dessert for all.

Hallowe'en came early at school this year too, as students in Hungary have their autumn break this upcoming week. I put up the decorations on Tuesday and we did all sorts of activities. Many thanks to the Nemes family for delivering 13 beautiful pumpkins. We had the carving contest for the grade nines and tens on Wednesday and the winners went on display in front of the principal's office. Thursday evening the school had its first Hallowe'en party. Many thanks again to the students who did a great job of organizing it, the cafeteria looked amazing, with all the jack o' lanterns, flashing disco lights and lasers and even a smoke machine. Costumes ranged from a blue Celtic warrior, Tarzan, to black cats and a princess.

A trifle bit late

Something I wanted to share was our fun with food on the first week of school. As a gastronomic motivational tool I made a nice basic trifle for my students and then had them make their own the next day to be judged by the principal. Needless to say it was a great hit and gave a sweet start to the year.

It examines some of the various spiritual and ideological influences that have, and continue to be a part of the American psyche.

English Competition in Mezőtúr

I had the pleasure of being on the panel of judges for the Reformed Church secondary school English competition held in Mezőtúr yesterday and today. It was a superbly organized event (thank you to Mrs Kati Kőmives ) that hosted students form Presbyterian high schools throughout Hungary. The venue was the Szegedi Kis Istvan High School. We judges came from various institutions throughout the country. We saw power point presentations with biblical themes yesterday and conducted interviews and listened to students today. While the other judges deliberated I gave a talk on the spiritual roots of the USA. The students won lovely prizes given by publishers and the Reformed Church. Our hosts did a wonderful job of making us feel at home, a great thanks for their hospitality.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving in Canada (where the harvest is a bit earlier than in the USA) I put out the decorations at home (the kids wondered if it was already Hallowe'en - there is some overlap in the decorations). Lunch was turkey breast with rosemary, thyme, apples and carrots, with a side of mashed potatoes. This week's lesson plans will feature lots on this lovely Christian celebration held dear by so many people in North America.

And Then There Were None

Just finished it and I loved it. I remembered seeing the theatrical version of this do, also written by Christie but with an altered ending at the Red Barn Theatre on Lake Simcoe with my mother when I was much younger. I had, however forgotten the ending thus allowing the novel to be as tense and grim as it was intended to be. I was surprised by the ending and later debated it with my wife (also a fan of Christie). My wife finds this novel far too gloomy and the end unsatisfactory. I had to agree that though in hindsight the foreshadowing is all there it is only with the explanatory letter that all becomes clear, and there are a few far fetched circumstances. Nonetheless I think it is a masterpiece in its genre. According to one source I found, it is the seventh most popular novel written. The book itself I chanced upon at a summer garage sale in Toronto and purchased it for about 50 cents. Money well spent.

Summer Reading

This past summer I finally took the advice of my friend and colleague Zoltan Bene and read some Michael Crichton and John Grisham. I have to say I was a bit skeptical but they were quite thrilling. I read the two Jurassic Parks, and the Sphere from Crichton. I found Grisham's overt political bias at the beginning of the Pelican Brief unpleasant but the story took off and swept me away with it. I`m still reading the third book in Christopher Paolini`s Eragon cycle, the trilogy has definitely slowed down. Meanwhile I`ve started Agatha Christie`s And Then There Were None (previously published under different titles), However I can already see that that book will deserve its own post

Kettlebell

On a personal physical fitness note, I wanted to mention that I'm beyond my 15th kettlebell session. What on earth is a kettlebell you ask... Well, as explained to me it is a traditional mode of Russian weight lifting providing a full body workout. The "bell" itself comes in different weights, we at the school work with the basic 16 kg one, which at this point is more than enough. After about 20 minutes to a half hour you're finished, really you couldn't do any more if you wanted to. I have teacher Bence Czako to thank for getting me hooked and helping me and others to work out. No I'm not Mr Universe yet... just on the way.

This weekend past was the 19th annual IATEFL confernce in Budapest, Hungary. My role was as international coordinator and then at the conference as announcer, or as Rakeesh from London coined it the "Conference Crier". Meeting the representative from the neighbouring countries was a true pleasure and a good opportunity to share ideas and experience. The conference itself was beautifully organised, all praise to the organisers. The speakers were terrific! I 've had a hand in writing the thank you letters to the speakers, participants, and exhibitors and I now find it hard to say something new about the conference . Suffice to say these truly are remakable opportunities for intellectual engagement and professional develpment.

Coming Up... Almost Naked...

I'll jump ahead for a post. Something to lok out for this school year will be my cooking shows. Yes, I propsed the idea to a few ELT conferences and they loved the idea. What will I Andrew Mile the "Almost Naked Chef" be doing? Showing teachers what dishes they can prepare in a classroom and what traditional holiday foods can be prepared at home by students.
Food has a long been a part of my teaching. I've brought some of the beloved dishes of English speaking nations into the English classroom (and once into the staff room). We started this year by making trifle, needless to say the studetns loved it as did the principal who acted as our judge for the "bake off". I'll be showing teachers how they can give their teaching a gastronomic dimension. It should be a lot of fun and hopefully inspire teachers to teach about food (something we regularily do) with the object of the discussion before them and "accessible". Imagine English lessons finger lickin' good!

Native Reserves

A few interesting encouters this summer were with Canada's First Nations. One of the first was travelling to Simcoe (not the lake) Ontario to visit my Grandmother and stopping on the fringe of a Reserve to purchase cigars (I have been known to indulge). I very pleasant surprise was that there was a promotional event, where I recieved free a box of small cigars. In a country where tobacco products can no longer even be displayed in stores this was highly unusual. The cigarillos themselves where produced by the Natives. We also bought bison meat (not native to southern Ontario) from an enterprising farmer nearby. Buffalo burgers taste great!
The summer home is on Lake Simcoe and across from Georgina Island, and although I spent many many summers there, I never visited the Island, which is a Native Reserve. So one day we all climbed into the GMC Yukon (great super-car-truck) and headed over via ferry. I enjoyed the drive around the island, which seems to be a lovely peacful community.
A highlight of the summer for me was the trip to Rama Reserve Casino in Orillia Ontario. Originally the plan was to play a few tables and go to the Tom Jones concert. However things did not go as planned... Tom had a sore throat and after three and a half songs cancelled the concert to much disappointment. He is performing in Budapest in November. The game room was packed and though I love a good game of cards I felt very very much out of my league, we did lose ten dollars on the slots. Nonetheless it was fun to see the place, a sort of "Indian" Las Vegas, I hope to return at some quiet time and imagine myself James Bond as I play roullette.

Summer Exhibition from the Holy Land

We visited the Royal Ontario Museum on two occasions, this summer once with the children to look at collection and once with Father Szabolcs Sajgo, parish priest of St Elizabeth of Hungary church in Toronto. On the second occasion we viewed the special exhibit on the Dead Sea Scrolls. I have to say I found the exhibit very well done. The curators did an excellant job of putting the scrolls into context. The various diffent theories on the authors of the scrolls were fairly presented and artifacts from the time period, including a couple of stones from the second temple created a "contextual intimacy". This atmosphere did impress a feeling of luminescence in an otherwise very cold room (for the sake of preservation). I do hope this exhibit will travel to Europe and Budapest.

My Home and Native Land (or at least one of them)

Well I decided to go chronologically and hope that I don't forget recent events.
The summer's monumental event was a trip by the whole family to Canada. It was the first time in ten years I'd been, and the first time for my three younger daughters. The flight going and coming was just fine I was quite satisfied with the service Lufthansa provided (only a couple of small customer service gliches here in Budapest going and there in Frankfurt coming back) Once in Toronto it was fabulous to be at the "old homestead" the kids loved the house and new garden.
We did so many things it's hard to list them all, everything from "all you can eat" at Mother Tucker's to the CN Tower, the ROM, the Metro Zoo, pool parties, Lake Simcoe and Martyr's Shrine in Midland Ontario, not to mention horse back riding lessons, and garage sales! I really should write about thes in greater detail and muse about them in seperate posts. Maybe I will.
An enormous thanks go to my parents for this trip almost every aspect of it. Thank You! It was seven magnificent weeks!

Wrap Up

Well the academic year is wrapping up. Formal classes have finished and there are only exams left for some. We teachers still have the administration and meetings to go through but soon the day will come when we will awake in the morning with the knowledge that there's no work for that day and that summer vacation has begun. I await that moment.

A fun and educational thing that came at the year at our school year was a field trip by the grade ten English specialization to the Canadian Embassy, thank you to Dr Katalin Csoma and Richard Martin-Nielson for receiving us and for their presentation on Canada and diplomatic work.

Last Thursday I set up a mini-kitchen in the staff room and cooked pancakes for the staff. It was a pre-Canada day event as the school will be empty on July the first. The staff seemed to find the pancakes, maple syrup and Canadian Club whiskey all very tasty.

Merry Mary Month of May

May has been a busy month and I'm behind on my blog entries, so with one post I'll try to get caught up and hopefully remember all that has happened.

Our school was happy to host Ingo Weighardt and his students from the St Stephen's School in Augsburg. It was great to enjoy a few "coffees" with Ingo and I had the opportunity to be with his students and talk to them about the USA and the Vietnam conflict.

Later we had Hungarian folk dance lessons together (Thank you Misi Timar) and I took them on a tour of the Terror House.
There's been cooking and baking as well, I had some boys over from my 10. B class to bake pizza and apple pie.

The workshop on public speaking is still underway with two more sessions to go.
The school year is ending with a highlight on Canada for the students of the English specialization, with a bit og geography, history, Native culture and pancakes and maple syrup... This Friday past we turned English classroom 308 into a kitchen and made stacks of pancakes for ourselves and for the staff of the school.

I'm sure I've forgotten several things... it has been an eventful month, I'll just have to post them as they occur to me.

Saint George's Day FUN for teachers

To celebrate St. George with the staff I baked a cheesecake and Sean made a trifle and we served them up with some gin 'n tonic. It was a nice completion to the week and we toasted our one colleague named George and Her Majesty and England.

With some props from the drama department we reenacted the legend of Saint George and the dragon. Classes 9. A 10 A and B and 11 B took part.. All the young men got a chance to be Saint George and the one who could kill the dragon the fastest and rescue the princess won the title.

Today I attended the annual NYESZE conference (Trade Association of Language Schools) in Budapest on behalf of the Karoli University. I was there to support a colleague, Klara Berczik as she presented the Theolingua language exam at the segment concerning language exams. I also helped at the IATEFL stand in the foyer.

A Course on Speaking

In cooperation with a student residence I have begun teaching a seven week course for young adults on public speaking. The goal of the program is to help the participants become better at speaking in a formal situation, be it an oral exam, a job interview, or giving a presentation before an audience. This week we examined the topic of meta-communication, that is to saw what our body communicates outside of the words we speak. The participants heard a presentation and then watched a short clip exemplifying the topic and afterwards there was an opportunity for hands on practice. The conclusion of the program will be the participants each giving a formal address.

The Vietnam Conflict

This Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were St Angela Days at the school. On these days the school invites speakers from various fields and professions and has fun and educational activities for students and staff alike. My part was to give a presentation on the Vietnam Conflict and the lessons it provides for people interested in the role of the USA in the world today.

We started the day with our first Holy Mass in English,at the school, Thanks to Fathers Robert Becser and Dennis Hess for celebrating and to teacher Kati Szel for helping with the English language hymns. During the week Sean Thompsom, our Anglo-Irish teacher in residence will be doing presentations on Ireland. Parts of the school have been bedecked in green, with leprechauns prancing about. Thank you to Mary Mile in Toronto for sending lots of St. Patirck's Day decorations and a terrific green tie. I was unfortunately not lucky with my "Kiss me I'm Irish" button.

English culture class has become Irish culture class this week. We started be casting the snakes out of Ireland (represented by hoola hoops and with rubber snakes). There will be green food and lots of songs as the week progresses. Not to leave the staff out I baked some Irish scones and brought in a bottle of Irish creme liquer.

Mini-conferences

I attended two training sessions in the recent past, the first on March 5th at the Catholic Pedagogical Institute (KPSZTI) in Budapest, where amongst other presentations Sean Thompson gave a workshop on Ireland. It was a great warm up for St. Patrick's day.

On Saturday The Foreign Languages Centre at the Karoli Universtiy had a one day course for Theolingua Language Exam examiners. My role in it was to present a "live" verbal examination for analysis. I would like to thank two of my secondary school students Julia Kende and Livia Nagy for their bravery. The two of them came and "endured" a mock exam where seven teachers watched and analysed there every move.

In honour of St. David and the Welsh three of my classes took part in leek eating races. There were red faces, sweat, tears, lots of water drunk and a great desire for chewing gum afterwards (no one thought to bring their toothbrush) The winners are Krisztian Szvoboda, Lorant Somogyi, and Humer Dankhazy. Congratulations!!!

English Cooking!?

English cooking often gets a bad rap, but it can be very exciting and fun. I've always loved cooking and baking and one my culinary ventures this year has been to discover the cooking of Jamie Oliver. I enjoy his cooking programs (so do my youngest daughters who often watch along with me) and his television specials. His website, cookbooks and tv programs are full of great ideas and recipes. Yesterday in honour of St. David I made milk chicken, orange sage potatoes, and apple pie, all recipes from his website, and all things that I've cooked before. If you are one of those who think the Brits have nothing to offer in terms of culinary expertise then give Jamie a try. What I'd like to try is to teach some of these recipes in an English class, but the logistics are still unsolved, maybe one day...

Happy Saint David's Day

Well it's been a long time since I posted, and there's a lot to fill you in on. However let me start my first post this year by wishing everyone a Happy St. David's Day. What I've done in connection was to prepare lessons on Wales for my students this week, they'll be learing a little history, the national anthem (yes, in Welsh), listening to Tome Jones and Catherine Jenkins and some will take part in a leek eating competition (not all were keen). At home I bought my wife some daffodils yesterday at the market and we had a lunch a la Jamie Oliver (who isn't Welsh) cooked by yours truly of course and had my in-laws and a friend named David over for apple pie. So it'll be a week dedicated to Wales wth lots of fun.

St Nicholas and Pancakes

This Friday past we celebrated St. Nicholas' day at St. Angela's, where the custom is for the grade 10's to help St. Nick as he visits the students. For this reason my 10 B English group shrunk in size to 4 students. We got permission to use the school's industrial arts room kitchen where we used the time to make pancakes. The boys were quite expert and I had to do little, simply tell them the procedure and proportions and help a little with the skittle. The pancakes were delicious!

St Andrew at St Angela's

On November 28th St Angela's School celebrated its first St Andrew's Day. Among the festivities, I organised Scottish shortbread baking contests in several of my English classes, the students were given a basic recipe by me and then went home to bake, the prizes were T-shirts. We also had a visit from Hungary's first Hungarian Scottish bagpiper, Gyorgy Keri. He played during a couple of the between class breaks and gave a presentation to several classes, his presentation and music were a hit! The surrounding pictues are some of the bake-offs, the piper and some of the students in the English Specialisation. God Bless Scotland and St. Angela's! After school the English Department hosted a small celebration for the teachers, featuring the shortbread and other Scottish delicacies!

This Thursday past was the professional development day for secondary school teachers at the Catholic Pedagogical Institute (KPSZTI) It was an enriching day with a presentation on using IT in the classroom, followed by a workshop on drama. I gave the last workshop on using the Bible in the English classroom. Holy Scripture is both an ends and a means.

Theolingua

I attended my first Theolingua examiners' training session along with 3o others from different universities and colleges from around Hungary. Theolingua is a state accredited language exam system with basic, mid and upper levels, its difference is in the fact it was designed for those who either for professional or personal reasons would like to take a language exam that includes Christian content along with all the other typical language exam subjects. The presenters were the examiners of the Karoli Gaspar University's Foreign Language Centre.

The weekend of October 3-5 saw the 18th annual IATEFL-Hungary conference in Balatonfured. I acted as MC and was elected to the managing committee, but far more noteworthy were the very engaging and provocative (in the most noble sense of the word) plenary talks. The workshops I chose were also excellent. I look forward to next year's conference in Budapest. I would encourage all English teachers to contact IATEFL and get involved in this great organisation. Great Reading

A couple of my summer readings are connected to my professional life and I'd like to recommend them.

London by Edward Rutherford is very enjoyable historical fiction. It traces the history of the city through the saga of several families. Also by Rutherford is Sarum the story of Salisbury and also recommended.

Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue, is linguistics the light and funny way. It was a pleasure to refresh my knowledge and laugh at the same time.

Retreat

In July I had the privilege and fun of being the interpretor for Father. Anthony Vadakkemury V.C. at a six day spiritual retreat in Érsekújvár. It was amazing! Thank you to Otília Kabai, András Török for another outstanding job in organising. Same place same time next year.

Congratulations to MM Publications - ELT Hungary on a great conference. With over 800 participants over two days it really was impressive to see how smoothly everything went. Thank you to them for inviting me to give my workshop on the Canadian Experience, it was terrific working together. The presentations I saw were excellent and I met a lot of old and new friends. ASIST in Hungary

This past week saw the introduction of ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) to Hungary. After completing the course last weekend I was very happy to act as interpreter for Joyce Borgs and Alan Briscoe from Mind Wales, in the first ever Hungarian language ASIST workshop. The workshop was organised by the Élet Mentálhigiénés Egyesület (Life Mental Health Society) in Budapest. The Society operates one of the 24 hour crisis lines in Hungary. Thanks again to Joyce and Alan for their hard work and to the organisers, Domonkos Buza and Mihály Kucsera.

Bodies

I took one of my grade nine English groups to the Bodies exhibit on display now in Budapest. We have just finished learning about the human body and being the last week of the school year it was a nice way to reward ourselves. If you don't know what the exhibit is, please have a look on the web for information. I also took my two oldest daughters. We found the exhibit fascinating! And I feel the bodies were treated and displayed in a respectful and dignified way. The human body is a miracle.

A serious matter.

Many of us know basic life saving skills that can help us in a crisis situation, such as if someones heart stops. But what if someones will to live stops? ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) provides practical training in what to do in a situation where the threat to life is the person themself. An ASIST workshop was held, for the very first time, in Hungary this weekend past by Joyce Borgs and Alan Briscoe from Wales and was a great success. I now feel I could act with greater effectiveness if I met a suicidal person. Thank you. This Thursday and Friday will be another workshop in the Hungarian language.

The Bunker Hospital

Today was the last day in Budapest for the exchange students from Augsburg. They began their day with my presentation on the United States of America, afterwhich I accompanied them to the recently opened Bunker Hospital. The castle hill in Budapest is criss-crossed with several kilometres of tunnels that have served different purposes over one thousand years. In the war torn twentieth century, one section of the tunnels was turned into a bunker and shelter, part of which served as a hospital. During the Cold War it was also prepared for the possibility of atomic attack. Part of these facilities have been opened to visitors this year. I also visited for the first time and I can decidedly say its well worth the visit. The students found it fascinating. Afterwards we bid goodbye to each other and they left by train to Munich.

Terror House Museum tour

I accompanied and gave a tour of the Terror House Museum in Budapest to the exchange students from Augsburg, Bavaria. I have given many talks and tours, but the place and its message never cease to have a strong impact on me. I believe that the students too were given an impression and possibly understood a little bit more of what a brutal totalitarian regime did to this country.

Tribute

We honoured Mrs. Károly Ábrahám yesterday through words, film, song, and scripture. She has had a great and beautiful impact on EFL teaching in Hungary and in neighbouring areas. It became evident to me that the magic she worked has not disappeared with her passing, but remains among us and will continue to inspire, and compel us as educators. Many thanks to Mark Andrews and Csilla Hős for organising the day.

Welcome to the teachers and students from Saint Stephan's School in Augsburg, Bavaria. It is great to see Ingo and his students again. The welcome dinner last night was spectacular, thank you to principal Robert Bécser for inviting me along. My part of their stay in Budapest will be to take the students on a tour of the Terror House Museum in Budapest and give them my talk on the United States. Saint Angela's has been twinned with Saint stephan's for five years now and has a short term student exchange program.

A day to celebrate the life and work of an exemplary teacher Mrs. Károly Ábrahám will be held on the 31st of May 2008, from 10 am to 2 pm at the Szent István Gimnázium, Budapest, where she taught from 1963 to 1979. I will be doing a presentation on the Year of the Bible in Hungary: work and fun with Holy Writ.
